Pharmacologic Management of Obesity: Improving Health and Reducing Risks

Session Overview:

Following the session, pharmacists will identify obesity as a chronic disease; recognize the impact of weight stigma on people’s experiences of care and the importance of advocating to improve access and reduce bias in the healthcare system; apply the 5As of Obesity Management; identify common comorbidities and health risks associated with excess weight and how patient comorbidities are related to their obesity care; recommend appropriate lifestyle modifications for weight loss; describe clinically important differences between prescription medications indicated for the long-term management of obesity; design an individualized pharmacologic treatment plan for an obese patient based on patient specific factors; formulate appropriate counseling information for an obese patient based on the prescribed pharmacologic therapy; and, recommend appropriate monitoring and follow-up for a patient undergoing weight loss therapy (lifestyle, pharmacologic, surgical).
